Testimonials

My 5 year old son participates in the tiny tiger program at Ipswich Martial Arts. When I had decided to enroll my son into a martial arts program he was very shy and often clung to me. He refused to participate in sports or any other extra activity. My sister, who is in the Marine Corp., suggested putting him into martial arts. It was the best thing I did for my son. Sensei Ed is more than his teacher he is a role model, a friend, and I would like to think of him as a part of our family. My son's social skills and behavior have improved a great deal since, and we couldn't be happier. My son looks forward to his classes and loves his friends that are there. Along with Sensei Ed, I can't say enough about how wonderful Masyo and the other parents are. Thank you so much Ipswich Martial Arts and I am truly greatful.

Sensei Ed is helping me to raise my children as strong and compassionate human beings. I have searched a long time for a credible institution that helps to develop confidence and character in our children. Disappointed with our traditional religious institutions that usually assist in moral growth, I am delighted to have found Sensei Ed’s class that not only teaches Karate in its purist form but also instills the virtues modesty, courtesy, integrity, compassion, gratitude, self-control perseverance and indomitable spirit. And, besides, my kids are having a blast!

Unfortunately, many of the martial arts styles taught in today’s dojos across the United States have become nothing more than glorified cardio kickboxing classes or “tournament schools” that teach their students how to fight for points. When I began my search for the style of martial arts that I wanted to commit myself to, I wasn’t sure exactly what it was I was looking for. I knew I wanted something that was more than simply a hobby to do a couple of times a week. I was looking for a way of life.
Something I could devote myself to that would not only train my body in the fighting arts, but something that would also develop my mind and character. I had always been that possessed. I sensed that I was not going to learn that in the majority of today’s karate schools.
As luck would have it, I ended up inside the training hall of Ipswich Martial Arts, a school that teaches one of the original Okinawan karate styles, Uechi-Ryu. Sensei Ed Labrecque is a skilled and dedicated teacher determined to preserve the traditional teachings and beliefs of the style. Training is rigorous and intense for everyone, yet Sensei Labrecque has a way of connecting with each one of his individual students in a way that brings out their personal best. While that of course is still a goal, I realize that I would like to keep doing for my whole life. It is a journey that won’t be completed with black belt, because if you choose to make it so, it becomes a code to live by, or way of life. Warriors in ancient times have referred to it as The Martial Way. I have experienced amazing changes in myself both physically and mentally over the last year, and I can only wonder at how I will feel after 5, 10, 15 years of this kind focused training. Sensei Labrecque is one of the few remaining traditional martial arts instructors that care more about integrity of the Art, than about simply making money. I feel honored to have him as my guide as I try to live my life according The Martial Way.

I have studied with Ipswich Martial Arts for over a year. The workouts, known as Katas are low impact, but effective in many ways! As you advance in Katas, you are receiving a working base for self-defense, which is a very comforting feeling in these times. In my line of work cardio vascular health is absolute, the Katas have actually lowered my blood pressure and resting pulse rate. Plus the losing of 10 pounds and the extra energy is wonderful.
Ipswich Martial Arts is built on respect from the first day you walk through the door, you feel welcomed. All students start with no knowledge of Uechi Ryu, and in the karate tradition we all work together and help one another. This builds a close camaraderie among the students of all levels. At Ipswich Martial Arts there is one thing you will not see, that is the crazy stunts that are shown on TV and in the movies.
I look forward to many more years at Ipswich Martial Arts, and strongly endorse Mr. Labrecque as a teacher!
