Uechi
(pronounced way-chee) karate originated as a martial art from
six to eight hundred years ago in China at the Central Temple
in Fukien Province. The style was called Pwang Gai Noon and
was taught there by Shushewa to Kanbun Uechi around the turn
of the century. Descendents of Kanbun Uechi brought the style
back to their homeland of Okinawa to the city of Futenma, which
is now the world headquarters of Uechi Style Karate. In 1958
George E. Mattson, who was the first American to receive a Black
Belt in the Uechi system, brought Uechi-ryu karate to the United
States.
Uechi-ryu karate
encompasses all aspects of the martial arts. The purpose of
studying Uechi-ryu is to develop the karate student into a
healthy, well-coordinated person, both physically and mentally
and to train him so that he may master the weaponless defensive
art.
